Cardiff seven lead the Dragons in National Championships
A magnificent seven Cardiff players have been selected for the Wales Dragons lacrosse squad that will play at the British National Championships.
Ceri Hill, the Cardiff captain, is joined by James Richardson, Peter Llewellyn, Marc Cork, Matt Davies, James Tiley and Jonny Morris.
The Dragons will be looking to retain the Centurion Cup that they claimed in spectacular style at the 2014 tournament.
The squad also includes Sam Miles from Ruthin Lacrosse which has just finished its debut league season. The north Wales club’s captain Matt Jones would have also been in the squad but he has been sidelined with a broken arm.
The 24-man squad will compete against the other home nations and select teams in the two-day tournament being held at Wilmslow, Cheshire, this Saturday. (May 2).
The competition will feature 12 elite sides with group and knock-out stages for trophies.
The Wales line-up features several players from 2014 World Championships in Denver, debutants and graduates from the Under 19 system.
“It’s a well balanced squad and we are really looking forward to the challenge at the BNCs,” said Head Coach Dan Funnell. “The line-up is evidence of our progressive approach to nurture talent and grow the game in Wales.
“It is great to have the experience of some Denver players and it is exciting to welcome players who have worked their way into contention and to celebrate the birth of a new club at Ruthin with their first senior selection.”
Cardiff Harlequins have the most players after a triumphant, unbeaten season in which they won promotion to the Premier League under the captaincy of Ceri Hill.
Midfielder Rhod Stanford, brother of World Triathlon champion Non and a star in Denver, will lead the midfield and Ben Piper, one of two Swansea Hawks, joins a potent attack fronted by veteran Paul Simpson.
Defender Matt Rees, of Cheadle, who is just 17-years-old, follows in the footsteps of father Mark, who represented his country at the 1994 World Championships in Manchester while brothers Joe and Aaron Longley, who both play for Rochdale, keep the family bond strong.
The event starts at 9.30am on Saturday, May 2, and runs till 5 pm on Sunday, May 3, with all games played at Wilmslow Lacrosse Club, Styal Road, Cheshire, SK9 4HP.
